Our History

The Gainesville Spartans was established 2017. Founded by Travis Bonning, Bradley Fleming and Dee Brown. Three rugby players trying to grow the sport of rugby in North GA.

Bradley played for the originally Spartans in Birmingham, England. Spartans RFC began in 1960. He grew up playing rugby in England then when he moved to the United States, he always wanted to create his own team named after his old club. Spartans RFC gave Travis, Bradley and Dee their approval to use their name and logo.

Since joining the Georgia Rugby Union, the Gainesville Spartans have been successful every season thus far:

18-19 = 2nd place

19-20 = 2nd place

21-22 = GRU Champions

22-23 = 2nd place

The club has grown over the years and continues to promote the sport. With the addition of Coach Chris Cooper in 2020, the club was able to finish their first season with him undefeated and named GRU Champions.

In 2023, the club officially started a women’s team and hopes to start a youth program in the near future.

The Gainesville Spartans has men and women on their team from all over the world. Many countries are represented such as England, France, South Africa, Poland, Argentina, Venezuela and more!

Gainesville Rugby stands proudly as a pillar of rugby culture in Georgia.
